Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to educate and develop the fitness of horses for jumping racing.The unit applies to individuals who have specialist knowledge, practical skills and experience at a level to qualify them to ride full trackwork, trials, jump trials and jump races within the racing industry.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, in accordance with applicable state/territory animal welfare and workplace health and safety legislative requirements.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit. Users are advised to check with the relevant Principal Racing Authority (PRA) for current requirements.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Element: Prepare horses for jumping education
  • Review horse flatwork skills and assess suitability for rider
  • Assess rider skills for introducing jumping to horses
  • Select horse tack and equipment for jumping exercises according to workplace procedures
  • Plan horse jumps training sessions
  • Assess and control risks associated with training area and equipment according to workplace health and safety
       
Element: Present pole and cavaletti exercises to horses
  • Introduce pole exercises and cavaletti exercises
  • Review horse aptitude for negotiating obstacles

  • Introduce single and related distance jumping exercises

  • Review rules of racing related to jumping racing
  • Select jumps races that are aligned to individual horse aptitude
  • Plan jump racing trials according to the abilities of the rider and the horse
  • Evaluate horse aptitude for jumping racing and record results according to workplace procedures
